HISTORY OF OGDEN UNION STATION

Originally built in December 1869. it stood amidst the network of union pacific tracks. It was a great building, standing two stories tall and was warmed by a cast iron stove. It settled beyond question Ogden’s status as the railroad center of this inter-mountain country.

The first through freight was a train load of butter consigned from the east to California. After decades of service times had changed and with new inventions this old building was no longer able to provide the needs of the area. The decision to tear it down and construct a more modern building was made.

Records show that the new union station was put in use in 1886.

In February 1923 (Tuesday night)  a fire destroyed the building. It was reported that after the fire parts of the station continued to stay in operation. Until Feb.26 1923 where one injury changed everything.

a large ornamental stone had loosened during the fire a few days before crashed down through the roof of the temporary ticket office fatally injuring   Frank G Yentzer. it was decided to tear down the old and construct a completely new one.

(some of the original foundation was used during the rebuild)

Construction on the current Union Station began in late 1923

In what was considered the worst rail wreck of 1944. the collision of two southern pacific west bound

trains at bagley (18 miles west of Ogden) at 6:38 AM Sunday in December.

The reported casualty toll on 1/1/1945 was

48 dead (28 military personnel and 20 civilians)

81 injured (41 service men and 40 civilians)

5 people remained unidentified

During the height of World War II, Union Station saw thousands of service men pass through. The bodies of the deceased was also brought to the station to be identified or on their journey to their destination. in what is now known as the browning theater. at the time it's believed to have been a postal sorting department either to be identified or on their journey to their destination.

Tipa Research has conducted several investigations at this location over the past couple years.

Here are some of the things we have seen that's considered a Point of interest to us.

September 4th 2010

upon arriving at the station we walked the outer area to take some photos of the surrounding area. there are a few old trains located through out the area and we noticed that people would get on them to have their photos taken.   During this time there was a wedding taking place in the stage area which caused some concern to how the investigation would go due to the loud music and the people coming out to use the rest room.

Once everyone arrived from our group we started gearing up and spoke with some of the staff members of the station. they had some interesting personal experiences that they was nice enough to share with us plus some history on the location.  then we started out to investigate.  while TIPA and the guest headed upstairs to the old timers lounge while PRS headed to another location.   After a period of time covering the "Dark Hall" and the old timers room PRS came up and had TIPA go to an "Undisclosed" area of the station to see if we would experience anything while they stayed with the main group.  after a period of time we all met back up at base and let everyone head off in areas that they wanted.  Members of TIPA stayed around the main floor when Josh from Tipa was notified that a member was not doing too well.  He immediately went to where she was at and this is her report of the events with video footage of the occurrence.

One of our field investigators had reported that she suddenly felt like something was wrong.

while others was tending to her we covered the footage with our Spectrum camera and was suprised by what we had seen.

Here is her report of the events that had un folded.

"It all started when I was taking a break with a fellow investigator.  We were chatting at the info booth in the main room, when I noticed that I couldn't focus my eyes on anything. It was like my eyes were "zoned out", but I wasn't able to unzone them of look in another direction.  I then tried to close my eyes and focus on grounding myself, which turned out to be a bit of a mistake as it was equally as hard to open them back up again later.  While my eyes were shut, I repeatedly told the entity to back off and that it was not welcome.  It helped enough for me to open my eyes and move around a bit. I took that as my chance to gain some ground and I started to walk away from the area in an effort to shake it off.  Ironically, I never felt particularly threatened by this entity, but just got the feeling that he was just desperate to communicate any way he could by going through me. It was a very strange feeling to be able to feel my own body's rhythm and movements, but also another at the same time.  At the time, I was more interested in getting it away from me, but now that I look back on the situation, it actually felt a little as if I was morphing in a sense.  Luckily more of my team members were returning to that main room as well and Josh "shot me" with the UV spectrum cam.  What it showed was very interesting....you could actually see this entity merged with my own face.  This entity was not going to give up easily, so I went out to sage.  It took several minutes of saging to get completely back to myself, but when it finally left, I could really tell it had. It was definitely a night to remember. "
